Mo´Kalamity es para mi de lo mejor que escuche en este ultimo tiempo. Esta artista nacida en Cabo Verde, radicada desde pequeña en Francia es dueña de un voz excelente, unica, carismatica y cautivante. Asimismo esta acompañada de los Wizards: guitarrista principal, Kubix excelente musico quien arrastra una excelente carrera dentro del ambiente como "riddim maker", acompaña a Winston McAnuff como guitarrista, subio al escenario con figuras como Omar Perry, Queen Omega y Kiddus I, entre otros y en el estudio de grabacion compartio notas con Alpha Blondy, Elephant Man, Jah Mason, Takana Zion y una larga lista de excelentes artistas. El propietario del bajo es Benoit Demuynck, un autodidacta del instrumento, con mucho Jazz en su historial, la segunda guitarra y los coros llegan a traves de Kael. La exquisita flauta y coros son de Yann Clery, a los teclados Anne Riou y la bateria de Mano.
Sin más, les recomiendo que ya mismo se pongan a escuchar, este, su ultimo material y a la brevedad les estoy dejando su disco anterior del que gusto un poco mas.-

Mo'Kalamity, cuyo verdadero nombre es Mónica Tavares, nació en Cabo Verde y creció en Francia. Su estilo canaliza el reggae y el soul clásico de
la época dorada de Jamaica en la década de los 60 y los 70 para expresar sus temas favoritos de comentario social e idealismo.
Después de trabajar como vocalista del coro para la estrella francés de reggae, King Malik, Mo’Kalamity se independizó en 2002, dando énfasis a sus
principios éticos de tolerancia y amor junto con exponer el egoísmo e indiferencia que caracterizan nuestras vidas. Prefiriendo cantar principalmente
en inglés, se encontró con la banda de reggae caribeña Exode, varios de cuyos miembros actualmente forman parte de su propia banda,The Wizards.
Ella produjó su primer album solista,Warriors of Light, en 2006, y ha presentado su obra en conciertos importantes por toda Europa.
En su canción “Vision” (Visión), Mo’Kalamity canta sobre las ironías de la condición humana, caracterizada por el aislamiento espiritual incluso
cuando se está rodeado de multitudes de personas. “Visión de cosas comunes que son inusuales / Permanecemos solos en la ciudad / Todos

Roots empress Dezarie has blessed the reggae community with the deliverance of her newest recording "Gracious Mama Africa". Released on the Afrikan Roots Lab record label, this album emerges from the seeds planted on her amazing debut album of 2001 "FYA".
Gracious Mama Africa transports the incredible voice of Dezarie to a whole new level - the highest heights. Her foundation is firmly established in songs such as "Travelers" and the title track. The brilliance and clarity of Dezarie's voice is reverently unveiled on "Exhalt". Gracious Mama Africa abounds with pleas for social justice and racial equality with selections like "Poverty", "Strengthen Your Mind" and "Justice".
But to this listener, the strength and power of Dezarie is most strikingly displayed in her condemnation of so-called civilization. "Gone Down", "Not One Penny", "Law Fe De Outlaw", "Slew Dem An Done" and "Judgment Come" all deliver conscious punches that penetrate the soul.
"Do what you want, wheresoever you please. Bombing Vieques, yes your bombing the seas. Lock up anyone that was opposing. Speaking against the nonsense that you were doing. But babylon you gone down, you gone down. Babylon funeral, you gone down." - Dezarie
After receiving Atlanta's "Best New Female Reggae Artist" award in 2001, Dezarie returned to her native island of St. Croix. Since that time, she has been working closely with Midnite, the players of instruments for "Gracious Mama Africa". Midnite's trademark sound is fully displayed on this album. Momentous bass lines from Phillip Merchant, classic one-drop from Dion Hopkins and the bubbling of Ron Benjamin on keyboards prevail throughout, accentuated by Abijah's charismatic guitar playing.
From the excellent overdubs of Dezarie's voice to the flying symbols on "Slew Dem" it is evident that Ron Benjamin worked tirelessly in the production and mixing of this album. The fruits of this labour are eloquently displayed on Gracious Mama Africa which is sure to be one of the best roots albums of 2003.

Clinton Fearon & Boogie Brown Band - Give And Take ( 2004)[Jamaica]

Clinton Fearon and the Boogie Brown hails out of Seattle, Washington nowadays, but the music he produces and offers comes straight from Jamaica. Give and Take, Mr. Fearon's latest release from the northwest, gives a modern day flavor from a recipe from yesteryear. Notable is the variety of styles that Mr. Fearon, a former member of The Gladiators band, offers, from the beautiful rocksteady inspired "Parable Sound", which makes one smile and remember The Ethiopians sweet melodies, to the playful and crying "Feel the Spirit" which gives the classical reggae beat that everyone seeks to find.
Infused throughout the album are sweet musical instrumentals that captivate the reggae mind and imagination. The Boogie Brown band has evolved into a sweet reggae machine with Clinton Fearon as the Captain commanding the way over snaky, twisting bass rhythms.
Mr. Fearon states in the repetitively hypnotic "Movin' Up", "In this world of competition, there is no recognition." Where this may speak some truth in our current societal system, it is just due to give him the recognition he deserves for putting out a great album. A very fine addition to any respectful reggae collection.

Alpha Blondy - Apartheid Is Nazism (1985) [Costa de Marfil]

While it might be sacrilege in reggae circles to say that any artist could challenge Bob Marley's mastery of the genre, Alpha Blondy fires a dead-on shot literally heard around the world with Apartheid Is Nazism. Furthermore, this work proves that great reggae does not have to come from Jamaica. "Afriki" opens the album with a nod to Jamaica, but while the music is classic, offbeat reggae, there is a strong African feel here, especially in the backing vocals. On every track, the carefully arranged and smartly played music of Blondy's band, the Solar System, tickles the ears with muscular polyrhythms and a variety of stealthily intoxicating percussion. Maneuvering skillfully on top of all of this is Blondy's uniquely plaintive voice. Blondy, like many reggae stars before him, tackles political issues with a dagger wit and thundering basslines. The title track, one of only two songs sung predominantly in English, pleads for America to "break the neck of this apartheid." Like the patois in which Blondy makes his incantations, his religious message is more mixed than the standard reggae paeans to Jah Rastafari. With tracks like "Come Back Jesus" and "Jah Houphouet" on the same album, it's clear that Blondy is attempting to strike a universal theme in the same way Marley did. While Blondy's career can't measure up to Marley when taken as a whole, Apartheid Is Nazism can stand up to most Marley releases.

Tuff Lion is an artist, himself, who could well be described as a ‘modern classic’. The very fact that you and I are existing in a frame of life which happens to not only coincide with this man’s own, but this man making music at the height of his powers is something really special. Long a fixture on the Virgin Islands Reggae scene, the Lion has played for just about every remotely prominent and gifted Reggae artist from out of the VI as a producer, a musician, an arranger, a writer and pretty much just everything you could want. In 2007, the master guitarist from out of St. Croix released his very own debut album, the very well received ”Utterance”, which actually featured him taking things to the mic and singing throughout the very strong affair. The very next year, however, he outdid himself and did so in the most natural and organic way that he possibly could without uttering a single syllable on one of the finest albums the region has ever produced. “Ten Strings”

On an album like this, besides the quality of a particular sound and song (which is unquestionable in this case), everything is left to the individual perceiving that sound. What I mean is that, when I analyze these songs, where there’re no lyrics, I’m likely (and hopefully) to get something out of them which you won’t and which Tuff Lion didn’t when he made the songs. The album was pushed by I Grade Records, and was, essentially, Tuff Lion’s own musical efforts on some of the riddims from I Grade - Basically placing music where there is generally lyrics. Siguiendo un poco las líneas de Tritube To The Martyrs y Handsworth Revolution En este encontremos una banda llevada un poco más a la tendencia lover en temas como Caught You Dancing, Rumors y en Reggae Fever vemos una especie de autocelebración en honor al reggae. Se mantiene, tambiñen en temás como Harassment, Heart of Stone y Nyahbinghi Voyage el mensaje combativo y de protesta, característica fundamental de sus primeros dos discos. Es importante aclarar que este albúm se lanzó como Reggae Fever en USA.

Luego de el paso, un poco, por el lover y la lírica rasta en Reggae Fever y sus anteriores albums. En True Democracy Steel Pulse vuelve con más fuerza, esta vez, sobre líricas más idelógicas (de hecho el cover art del disco nos dice mucho, donde David Hinds lee la biblia a quienes son un grupo de alumnos) Leggo Beast cita al adulterio, Man No Sober nos habla en contra de la embriaguez y el alcohol. Tenemos un solo hermoso tema de amor llamado Your House (existe una excelente interpretación de esta tema de la mano de Etienne M'bappe).

Steel Pulse (en español: Pulso de acero) es una banda británica de reggae formada en 1975.
Tras Tribute To The Martyrs y Reggae Fever (Caught You), sus dos siguientes trabajos, abandonan Island y publican en Elektra uno de sus trabajos más aclamados, True Democracy al que siguió el notable Earth Crisis. Sin embargo, las presiones de la compañía para decantar su música hacia un reggae-pop bailable y de mensaje tenue, bastante evidente en Babylon The Bandit, acabaron de alejar a Steel Pulse de Elektra.Steel Pulse es la voz orgullosa de los hijos de la emigración caribeña establecida en Gran Bretaña. Su música es la crónica y la denuncia de la realidad social de los negros en el Reino Unido. Nacidos en la ebullición estética de finales de los 70 en Inglaterra y contemporáneos al nacimiento del punk, Steel Pulse empezó a abrirse camino con paso firme en Birmingham en una dirección opuesta a la desesperanza punk que vio sus orígenes. David Hinds (voz y guitarra), Basil Gabbidon (guitarra líder y coros) y Ronnie McQueen (bajo) publicaron su primero sencillo en 1975 ("Kibudu, Mansetta And Abuku") en un pequeño sello independiente, Dip, con un notable éxito local, al que siguió "Nyah Love" para Anchor, otro sello independiente, y "Ku Klux Klan" para Island Records. Con este tema dejaron bien clara su militancia antirracista y su ideario firme, que ya les habían ocasionado problemas en sus inicios. Tras el éxito del single, Island publica su primer disco, Handsworth Revolution, que devendría un álbum esencial en la historia del reggae hecho en el Reino Unido.
A finales de los ochenta y durante todos los noventa, su popularidad ha ido en aumento en Europa y, sobre todo, en Estados Unidos, donde fueron el primer grupo de reggae que actuó en el popular show televisivo Tonight.
En este tiempo ficharon para MCA editando varios discos entre los que destacan su debut en el sello, State Of Emergency y el directo en el Elyseé Montmarte de Paris de 1992,Rastafari Centennial, un homenaje en el centenario del nacimiento del que fue emperador de Etiopía, Haile Selassie.

Encontramos, a mi criterio, uno de los mejores discos de Steel Pulse, con líricas de más confrontación, enojo y de contenido político que en su anterior albúm Handsworth Revolution. De todas formas hay como una cierta calidez en sus temas. Como bien se observa en la arte gráfico del disco tenemos temas en honor a los mártires (Steve Biko, George Jackson, entre otros.) También nos invitan a sentirnos identificados en su lucha con temas como Unseen Guest. Realmente recomendable.

Groundation es una banda californiana que tiene un sonido de reggae moderno. Labanda tiene la mision de integrar el sonido moderno de este siglo a la sensibilidaddel reggae roots que era tocado en el pasado.." Stephen Davis, AuthorSe dice que si no conoces tu pasado, no sabras el futuro; bien, Groundation conoceel pasado y va caminando hacia el futuro, Capturan la esencia del verdadero reggae roots y lo fusionan con Jazz y dub para elevar el genero a una nueva plataforma. Los criticos nacionales y la prensa del mundo alavan sus discos y colocan a Groundation dentro de las bandas de reggae mas respetadas del mundo .Groundation fue formado en el programa de Jazz en el campus de la Universidad de Sonoma en el año 1998, por Marcus Urani (Piano/Teclados/Organo), Ryan Newman (Bajo) & Harrison Stafford (Vocales/Guitarrra). En el 2000 se suma David Chachere, un trompetista de jazz de San Francisco y Kelsey Howard, trombonista de North Bay, en el 2003 se suma el percusionista Mingo Lewis Jr. (hijo del legendario percusionista de Santana Mingo Lewis), las coristas Jamaiquinas Kim Pommell & Stephanie wallace se suman en el 2004; la ultima incorporacion fue la del baterista de jazz/fusion TeKanawa Haereiti, en julio del 2008, reemplazando a “Papa” Paul Spina (Les Claypool, Motherbug). El sonido de Groundation puede describirse como una fusión orgánica de Roots Reggae y Funk/Jazz fusión con dub. Las semillas de este sonido progresivo se han plantado por todo el mundo y hoy están dando sus frutos, desde su primer tour por Europa en el 2004, Groundation ha tocado en mas de 30 países en los 4 continentes, como ser Polonia, Grecia, Brazil & Israel. Han encabezado festivales como ser el Nice Jazz Fest (Francia), Summerjam (Alemania), Rototom Sunsplash (Italia), The Cactus Festival (Belgica) y The Papa Kiki Festival (Nueva Caledonia). Su ultimo tour en Europa alcanzo un nuevo record, llenando con 6000 personas Le Zenith, en Paris.

Bueno, sin lugar a dudas, Dennis es uno de los cantantes más respetados, reconocidos y amados de la música jamaiquina. Es imposible resumir la exitosa y extensa carrera de unos 30 años de este cantante. Supo insertarse desde muy joven en la escena musical de Jamaica, grabando solo con 16 años lo que sería su hit que lo haría pisar fuerte internacionalmente, ''Money In My Pocket'' en 1972 de la mano de Niney Holness, con quien trabajó conjuntamente durante la década del 70.
Este disco cuenta con grandes músicos, con Sly & Robbie (éstos también como productores), Flabba Holt, en los veintos David Madden, Dean Fraser, en guitarra Willie Lindo, entre otros. Grabado en Channel One y Harry J en Kingston, es un verdadero despliegue de una gustosa música agradable de escuchar. Cadencias y arreglos que nos van a llevar a disfrutar cada minuto de sus piezas.
